Preach My Gospel Manual

This web page is not intended in any way to be a "program of the church" for doing missionary work. It is just some suggestions from us on things we have found that helped us to better follow the already existing church member missionary program as outlined in "Preach My Gospel". Your primary guide in doing member missionary work should be the church's manual "PREACH MY GOSPEL". You can get a copy of the "Preach My Gospel" manual on the following web pages:

Order On Line from BYU Bookstore in several languages
Order From Church Distribution Center in English
Read on line in several languages or hear it in English on your MP3 player

Suggestion for seeing the full scope of this web page first

It is suggested that you scroll down the entire page and read all of the section headings first so you have an understanding of the scope of the material on this web page before you open any of the links. Then you can scroll to sections that you are interested in. It is our hope that the materials on this web page will help you be a better member missionary what ever your calling or situation is.

KEYS TO SUCCESS

The first key to getting others to do missionary work is to be doing it yourself!

The second key is to get the Bishopric and Ward Council members participating in missionary work. If the leaders of the ward or branch are not doing missionary work, you will not be very successful in getting the members to do it.

The third key is to have planned activities. When people are involved they participate. The easiest way to get them invovled is to have planned missionary activities. As an example of a planned missionary activity, Vance Carolin, the ward mission leader in the Big Fork Montana Ward challenges the Ward Council members to visit a less active member each month on the way home from council meeting.

The fourth key is REPORTING BACK. Where there is no accountability there is no responsibility.

42 Evidences of the True Church with Bible References
TRI-FOLD MISSIONARY HANDOUT FOR YOUR FAMILY TO USE
We have prepared a brochure for you to hand out that is the 42 Evidences of the True Church. This is a list taken from a book called "The Greatest Quest" by Blain and Brenton Yorgason (Deseret Book Company). The book is a novel that describes the search by five college students to find the one true Church of Jesus Christ. At the end of the book, the authors combine their research with the work of Henry Whiffen who also developed a similar list. Together the list gives a total of 42 points to consider. In this brochure we have prepared, each point has been documented with scriptural references from the King James version of the Bible. This brochure can be printed 1 side or as a tri fold two sided hand out. We have also prepared it in color as well as the less expensive to print black and white version.

Here are 37 things you would have to do to write a book like the Book of Mormon
TRI-FOLD MISSIONARY HANDOUT FOR YOUR FAMILY TO USE

Occasionally we hear some say, "I could believe your Mormon doctrine if I just did not have to accept the story about Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon". Here is a brochure to help you answer that question. It is called "A Challenge To Duplicate The Book Of Mormon". It shows you 37 things you would have to do to be able to duplicate what Joseph Smith did to give us the Book of Mormon. It makes it pretty obvious a normal man could not have done this on his own without God's help. It is a 2 sided brochure that prints on 8 1/2 X 11 paper then folds as a tri-fold handout. You will have to print it two times if your printer does not print two sided copies.

Answers To Some Difficult Questions Our Family
Has Been Asked While Doing Member Missionary Work

(We are putting the newly added ones at the top so you can find them easier.)

One of the difficult parts of doing missionary work is to see the people you have converted fall away. One of the biggest considerations in making that choice is what will happen to your children and grandchildren? When you are in that situation, here is a list of questions you might want to discuss with those individuals before they make that final decision.
What is the alternative?

INDIVIDUALS CAN CONVERT 1000'S

ACCEPTING THE CHALLENGE
Alma 26:22
Yea, he that repenteth and exerciseth faith, and bringeth forth good works, and prayeth continually without ceasing -- unto such it is given to know the mysteries of God; yea, unto such it shall be given to reveal things which never have been revealed; yea, and it shall be given unto such to bring thousands of souls to repentance, even as it has been given unto us to bring these our brethren to repentance.

In a talk published in the July 1985 Ensign, President Ezra Taft Benson used these quotes from talks given by President Spence W. Kimball:

“Wilford Woodruff baptized two thousand people on his mission in England in a short few months and … Heber C. Kimball baptized 1,800 in a few months. … There are hundreds of other brethren who have baptized tens and fifties and hundreds during their missions. Is it possible that each of you could develop some Wilford Woodruffs and Brigham Young's who could baptize hundreds and thousands? Can we raise our sights?” (Mission Presidents’ Seminar, June 1975.)

Quoting from that marvelous verse in the Book of Mormon where Alma talks about bringing thousands of souls unto the Lord, President Kimball then said, “Did you hear the word thousands? … Not hundreds, not dozens, not tens, but thousands. … The Lord … knows what these words mean, and when he uses the word thousands, he means thousands. And that’s ten hundred in a thousand!” (Mission Presidents’ Seminar, June 1978.)....

Thus, the first major emphasis of the Lord’s prophet is to increase the number of convert baptisms in a significant and dramatic way. Will you accept this challenge? Will you share your personal conviction with others that the prophet of the Lord expects us to baptize many more people in a very solid and stable way?

This is the full talk by President Ezra Taft Benson quoting President Kimball's promise that we can convert 1000's as individuals:
Ensign July 1985
By President Ezra Taft Benson
President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

President Kimball’s Vision of Missionary Work

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
D&C Section 4:
1 Now behold, a marvelous work is about to come forth among the children of men.
2 Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day.
3 Therefore, if ye have desires to serve God ye are called to the work;
4 For behold the field is white already to harvest; and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in store that he perisheth not, but bringeth salvation to his soul;
5 And faith, hope, charity and love, with an eye single to the glory of God, qualify him for the work.
6 Remember faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, brotherly kindness, godliness, charity, humility, diligence.
7 Ask, and ye shall receive; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Amen.
NOTE: THIS IS A PICTURE OF OUR MODERN DAY SICKLE:
Not 10's not 100's but 1000's. AMMON'S PROMISE IS THOUSANDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Elder Hugh B. Brown was a lawyer from Canada serving in England before the start of the 2nd World War. This is a talk he gave years later at BYU, where he shares a conversation he had as a lawyer with a famous judge in England. They discussed what the signs of a true prophet in the Latter-days would be. He was assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when this devotional address was given at Brigham Young University on 4 October 1955.
Conference Talks To Help You Answer Questions
When You Do Missionary Work:
When Constantine became a Christian in the fourth century, he called together a
great convocation of learned men with the hope that they could reach a conclusion
of understanding concerning the true nature of Deity. All they reached was a compromise
of various points of view. The result was the Nicene Creed of A.D. 325. This and subsequent
creeds have become the declaration of doctrine concerning the nature of Deity for most of Christianity ever since.
The Lord is fulfilling His promise that His gospel shall be as the stone cut out of the mountain without hands.
The Stone Cut Out of the Mountain
When the emperor Constantine was converted to Christianity, he became aware
of the divisiveness among the clergy concerning the nature of Deity. In an attempt
to overcome this he gathered the eminent divines of the day to Nicaea in the year 325.
Each participant was given opportunity to state his views. The argument only grew more heated.
When a definition could not be reached, a compromise was made. It came to be known as the Nicene Creed,
and its basic elements are recited by most of the Christian faithful... How deeply grateful I am
that we of this Church do not rely on any man-made statement concerning the nature of Deity.
