Essential Oils For Use In A Disaster
When There Are No Available Doctors

When Mother Nature created diseases, she also created the cure.

We live on the Key Peninsula in Washington State. We have attended several emergency preparedness training sessions sponsored by the Pierce County Emergency Command Center. In that training, we have been warned over and over that because of the remote area we live in and the proximity of two very large cities, if there is a major disaster like an earthquake we should not expect to see any first responders for at least 4 or 5 weeks, not even if your arm is cut off. That is because all the fire, police and other first responders will be pulled into the bigger cities where most of the injured people are. For that reason we have become very interested in alternative medicine. We feel like for the sake of our family we need to find a way to be able to take care of basic first aid needs in a disaster where there are no doctors or medicine available for extended periods of time. We are seeing disasters all over the country now where people are without electrical power for days and sometimes weeks. In some of the recent impending disasters the local officials have warned people to try to get at least a 3 day supply of food and water. But no one seems to mention medical supplies. That would seem to be pretty critical if you are stranded by flood or other impairment and have a serious injury. Because of that we have tried to get first aid training as well as medical supplies in addition to just food and water. We feel we need to be as self-sufficient as possible and able to better survive any upcoming situation where we are on our own for a few days or even weeks.

1. Always keep a bottle of V-6 Vegetable Mixing Oil, Massage Oil Base or any pure vegetable oil handy when using essential oils. Vegetable oils dilute essential oils if they cause discomfort or skin irritation.
2. Keep bottles of essential oils tightly closed and store them in a cool location away from light. If stored properly, essential oils will maintain their potency for many years.
3. Keep essential oils out of reach of children. Treat them as you would any product for therapeutic use.
4. Do not use essential oils rich in menthol (such as peppermint) on the throat or neck area of children under 30 months of age.
5. Direct sunlight and essential oils. Lemon, bergamot, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, White Angelica and other citrus oils may cause a rash or darker pigmentation if applied to skin exposed to direct sunlight or UV rays with 3 to 4 days of use.
6. Keep essential oils away from eye area and do not put into ears. Do not handle contact lenses or rub eyes with essential oils on fingers. Oils with high phenol content – oregano, helichrysum, cinnamon, thyme, clove. Lemongrass, bergamot, Thieves and ImmuPower – may damage contacts and irritate eyes.
7. Pregnant women should consult their health care professional before using essential oils containing constituents with hormone-like activity, such as clary sage, sage, Idaho tansy, juniper and fennel.
8. Epileptics and those with high blood pressure should consult their health care professional before using essential oils. Avoid using hyssop, fennel and Idaho tansy oils.
9. People with allergies should test a small amount of oil on a small area of sensitive skin, such as the inside of the arm, before applying the oil on other areas. The bottom of the feet is one of the safest, most effective places to use essential oils.
10. Before taking GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) essential oils internally, always dilute with an oil-soluble liquid like honey, olive oil or soy milk.
11. Do not add undiluted essential oils directly to bath water. Use Bath Gel Base as a dispersing agent for oils in the bath.

Oils On Feet

It is best to apply the oils to your feet.  The pours in the skin on your feet are larger than anywhere else on you body.  That lets the oils absorb into your system faster.

bridge falling
We have been told that in a large earthquake (i.e. 8.0 or more) that there is a good possibility that the Tacoma Narrows Bridge could fall. That would leave the Peninsula pretty much cut off except for one road down past Olympia up through Shelton. That would greatly hamper resupply or emergency help to the area.

fox island bridge
Fox Island is truly an island and if that bridge were to go down in an earthquake they would be left to using boats, or aircraft to get resupplied or receiving emergency help.

Vashon Island
Vashon Island is already a island accessible only by ferry. If the ferry terminal was to be damaged in an earthquake they would be left to resupply by air or small boat. They already only have access to emergency care at a hospital by helicopter. In a major earthquake where those aircraft are no longer available, people on Vashon Island could pretty much be on their own medically for several weeks.
